Got some wheel experience and eager to do more with clay that matches your vision? This class is designed to expand your skills. You’ll begin with wheel throwing to create functional pieces, then shift to hand building to add your personal touch. Over multiple weeks, you'll learn how to transform your basic creations into sculptural works of art or more controlled forms of functional pottery. Ideal for those with a bit of wheel time under their belt or those ready to explore intermediate techniques.

What you’ll learn:

The process of starting with a piece on the wheel and how to dissect or attach through handbuilding techniques to create more exciting work than what you can do in the round.

  • Building on wheel-thrown pieces with coils, slabs, and extrusions
  • Cutting apart and attaching wheel-thrown pieces together
  • Managing the drying of multiple pieces and attachments to prevent cracks
  • Making larger works starting at the wheel and continuing with hand building techniques on and off the wheel

Duration:

  • Meet once a week for 6 weeks
  • Each Class Session is 2.5 hours

Experience & Requirements:

  • Beginner wheel techniques of making basic forms

Cancelation & Refund Policy

To request a cancellation and refund, email info@throwandbuild.com. 100% of tuition less $15 processing fee when requested no later than 14 days of start of class. 80% of tuition requested less $15 processing feel within 7 days. 50% refundable less $15 processing fee refunded within 3 days before class. There will be no refunds within 2 days before class starts. Should a class not fill sufficiently, we may cancel it one week prior to the first class session.

FAQ’S

I missed class, can I reschedule?

No class make up if you miss a class. However you have unlimited access to open studio for the duration of your class. Your instructor will catch you up in the next class after the demo and you can get help during your instructor's "Potter's Hours" where they are the studio tech and they can help you at those times as wll.

During my 6-week course, can I access the studio outside of class time?

Yes, students enrolled in multi-week classes has unlimited access to the open studio.

Can I bring my friends to open studio?

Yes, your friends are welcomed to come to the studio for 1 session for Open studio during the studio's public hours from 10am - 2pm Sat & Sun, they are not permitted to attend during class sessions. If space is available at work tables, they can use the space to play with clay. If the studio is busy, we ask that you defer the workspace station to other studio members.

What should I wear to class?

Wear comfortable clothing that you are okay with getting dirty. We have aprons for your use, but they may limited.

Do I need to bring my own tools?

We have all the tools you need to shape and trim clay and some others you can try and experiment with. You are welcomed to bring other tools you want to use to make your pottery and keep in your space.

How much does additional clay cost?

Prices for a 25lb bag of clay is about $40-$45 a bag of clay.
